SMS OTP works well in Africa because it needs only a cellular signal. No app, no data bundle and no smartphone are required, and a message reaches a basic handset the same way it reaches a flagship.
Why that matters
Most people in the region reach the internet through a phone, and many top up data in small amounts. Data can run out in the middle of a signup, and coverage can drop between towns. A text still arrives once the signal returns.
- Works on feature phones and smartphones alike
- No dependency on a messaging app being installed
- Familiar: users already expect a code by text
The caveats
SMS is not perfect. Delivery can be delayed, and SIM swap fraud is real. Treat SMS as a strong default for reach, not as the only channel for high-value actions.
Tambua sends OTPs over SMS first and can fall back to other channels if a message fails.
